The Fashion Emporium
Know Thyself – Be Kind To Thyself
by Nicky Walker
“Know, first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly.”
– Epictetus (Greek philosopher)
Hello everyone and welcome to the Fashion Emporium where we focus on beauty inside and out. I have bestowed upon myself the task of ensuring that each and every one of you beautiful creatures fully live up to your true fashion potential. Now what does this entail you may ask? Well that simply means that at the end of the day, you will be able to figure out exactly who you are on the inside and express that precisely with clothing, accessories and make-up.
My definition of Fashion is simply this: Allowing how you look on the outside to completely reflect who you are on the inside. Now this will differ from the popular definition of fashion which might go something like this
“The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior”
or even this,
“Items of clothing and accessories that are in popular demand at any given moment.”
Those are a tad bit too stuffy for me, but if you want something that sounds a little more collegiate than my first definition, try this one on for size,
“Fashion is always changing, slightly elusive, extremely seductive. It has the power to transform an image and make a social statement.”
Isn’t that one GREAT! This is exactly the power that clothing and accessories have. They allow you to speak and make an impact without even saying a word!!!!! Ok, so maybe I’m a little too excited now but this is life changing stuff! 😉
Ok, so enough of my rambling (and gushing), but you catch my drift. If you walk away with one thing and one thing only from this column, let it be this,
“Fashion is each person’s SUBJECTIVE and UNIQUE expression of who s/he is.”
NO, you don’t have to wear what everyone else is wearing. Nope, you don’t need to ensure that you incorporate neon colors into your wardrobe this season either. The best fashion statement that you can make is to completely be yourself on the inside at ALL times and then synch that up with pieces of clothing that you like, while ensuring that the clothes chosen are flattering. Some of the most powerful and influential people in the world achieved great success because they remained true to the core of who they are regardless of what others think and it just happened to also come ooooozing out in their fashion ;).
Picture Patricia Field (legendary Fashion Stylist for Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, etc), Michael Jackson, Betsy Johnson (legendary Fashion Designer) and Lady Gaga.
These people are all known for their unique style. Their clothing ALWAYS expresses something about who they are. It might be their particular mood on that day, a character for a performance, or it remains consistent overall.
But one thing is sure – they stand out. Most of us would not wear what they wear, but they are 100% comfortable, because they are being themselves.
So pay attention to you. Yes you. Busy mother, wife, child, employee, employer that you are. Yes! I know you’re too busy! Yes, I know that you have time for everyone and everything else but yourself, and that’s where my next point comes in. Be kind to thyself! No more refusing to accept compliments, foregoing girls’ night out and definitely stop putting off that spa day! The kinder you are to yourself, the easier it will be to fully express who you are at all times. You can only give what you have and I say, it is time to replenish your supply and completely indulge yourself.
So, let’s figure this out. What’s your style? What kind of clothes do you like? If you could close your eyes right now and reopen them to see the perfect wardrobe, what items would it contain? What would be the predominant color? You have to do some soul searching to come up with the answers.
So now that you’ve agreed to:
- Completely be yourself, and
- Be kind to yourself
Lets talk about translating all of the beauty, wonder, glamour, class, luxury and strength that is you into a wardrobe! Open up the discussion at www.fashemp.blogspot.com and let’s work this out together! 😉
Till next time, stay beautiful!
